Frank Black
At the Fenix
7/17/98
by
J. Kim
That Frank
Black and Kim Deal have carved out
tremendously successful careers after the
Pixies broke up indicates the talent that
supreme indie band once held. On Friday,
Black and his four-piece band showed the
standing-room only Fenix crowd why his guitar
belongs in the indie rock hall of fame.
Shaved head and suited,
the well-dressed man and friends blasted
through a phenomenal set of intelligently
written, intricately structured lyrics and
breathtaking rhythm changes. Black takes
breathtaking jumps from chord, leaping from
driving surfrider punk to moody and
introspective quiet effortlessly. His vocals
can be commanding or pleading, following the
mood of his guitar.
To the
moshing, flailing crowd's delight, Black
delivered the hits like "I Want to Live
in Los Angeles" and
"Headache". His band put on an
amazing show, demonstrating the full range or
guitar, bass and drum virtuoso. However, a
part of me left feeling a bit unsatisfied
because of my unfulfilled fantasy that Kim
Deal would pop out from the crowd and sing
"Monkey Gone to Heaven." Alas, no
monkeys, but rather a fine artist who holds
his own.
Dodi, who
roams the clubs of Seattle, warmed the
sweltering stage for Black. The Pixies
perhaps inspired their quirky indie pop
sound. They set a great tone for a great set.
