EndFest99, KNDD The End 107.7’s Annual Radio Festival Kitsap County Fairgrounds, Silverdale, WA August 7, 1999:

10:30 pm Friday Night – Mark, our trusty reporter calls … no Deftones interview! Justin is appointed to hack together a story instead. Damien will take photos.

12:00 am – crash at Damien’s for pre-EndFest preparation, brainstorming and scheduling… Damien cleans his place for four straight hours…

9:00 am Saturday Morning - Stumble out of the love seat I forgot to fold out. Get ready to go; Damien starts cleaning again.

10:00 am – Leave to get film, gear, and the hell out of Dodge. Based on last year’s experience on the ferry, we’re driving around Puget Sound. (taking the Narrows Bridge).

11:20 am – Freeway stopped outside Silverdale. We back-up onto an onramp to take sidestreets.

11:33 am – Damien panics. It’s half an hour till the Jungle Brothers are scheduled to start and we sit motionless for five full minutes behind a mint- condition Chevy Citation on Chico Way.

11:35 am –
Damien puts Van Halen’s "1984" in the stereo. The sun comes out.

12:05 pm – Still in traffic. A road sign urges us to "Drive Friendly!"

12:30 pm – After discovering we ran the whole way from the parking lot for nothing trying to catch the now-canceled Jungle Brothers, I take off to see
Polecat (the ONLY LOCAL BAND to play this year’s festival). They play BIG emo-core rock-sonic swirling guitars and pop hooks. Drums, bass, straightforward punk. Think Hum and June of 44.

1:10 pm –
Eve 6. Pop punk. While Green Day invented it, Eve 6 kills it by crossing it with The Police (and failing). They even goaded the pre-teen girls, a la Blink 182, to take their shirts off.

1:30 pm –
Boom Boom Satellites. This Japanese duo rocked a mix of Big Beat (Fat Boy Slim, Chemical Bros.) and space rock (Sonic Youth, Spiritualized) for over an hour. Glow sticks spin everywhere.

2:40 pm –
Deftones. Singer screaming from his guts - I get beaned in the head by a flying roll of industrial strength toilet paper.

3:07 pm –
Moby walks around backstage in blue moon running shoes.

3;20 pm – Zebrahead plays on the B-stage next to a 20-foot inflatable Trojan wrapper. Somehow this is appropriate.

4:10 pm –
Les Claypool of Primus challenges the masculinity of the hundreds throwing mud-filled plastic bottles ("You with the small penis!") This did not stop me from getting hit in the head again-this time by someone’s car alarm remote.

4:40 pm –
Moby plays his DJ set, as expected, he is brilliant. If only the annoying fratboy ravers knew what a privilege it is to see him perform…

Since there’s a lull in photo opportunities, Damien goes off to dance in the crowd.

5:20 pm –
Sharon from Len can "Steal my sunshine" anytime. The DJ’s stood on our shoulders to get closer to the crowd. Between songs they call attention to Damien’s erratic dancing and high-five him.

6:00 pm –
Moby plays his performance set. He walks around the stage like his mom forgot to give him his Ritalin – all bongos and "Jackson" guitar (the kind Poison used in the 80’s). The man "feels" his music.

7:35 pm – Left
Everclear to see more of Moby. Sorry, I’d already seen Everclear's set a year ago.

7:40 pm – While watching rest of
Everclear’s set with Carol (photog), a guy who "knows" me from back in college starts calling shit on me about some girl I had a thing for in 95’. He seems to think that I haven’t changed, so I just stand there and pretend I’m not annoyed… Did I fail to mention I’ve been beaned in the head two or three times by now and don’t give a shit what happened to what’s-her-name? Everclear cover some Steve Miller Band song as a finale (they did an AC/DC cover the last time I saw them).

8:10 pm –
Orgy. Speaking of covers… This glam-goth Florida band has one or two good Failure-esque songs; the rest, produced and predictable.

8:40 pm –
Kid Rock is the new Guns ‘N Roses. BOTTLES EXPLODE EVERYWHERE until the producers promise no music until it stops. Kid Rock, following the megastar guidebook, starts with samples. Then butt-rock ups the pitch until… "My
name is
KIIIIIIIIIID Rock!"

9:15 pm –As soon as we finish our film, we dash for the car (picturing hundred-car lineups out of the lot) As we pass the Honeybuckets, we hear another singer start in. It hits us, we MISSED THE
KID ROCK MIDGET! Oh well – no stopping us now…

9:30 pm –Circle K for 44 ounces of replenishing caffeinated bliss! Ahhh!

10:00 am Sunday Morning – Tylenol, please.
