Subminute Radio

They’re Hot, They’re Sexy, But They Still Got No License to Drive . . .

By Mary Cohan, Noah Cohan, Their Mom, and Their Uncle Davesubminute: radio

[Editor’s Note: Anyone doubting the crowd-attracting power of radio or the personal power of Marco Collins, Program Director of Seattle radio station, KNDD, 107.7 FM, would have been quickly disabused of those notions on a recent Wednesday night at Moe’s, when Seattle’s largest live music room was packed and journalistic luminati like Tom Phelan of the Seattle Times, Gene Stout of the Post-Intelligencer, and Stranger Publisher Tim Keck, wandered the halls.

These respected personages and many others were in attendance to see and hear Subminute Radio, a young band from Gig Harbor, Washington who are rumoured to be a favorite of Collins and a possible "next big thing." Rightly or wrongly, Collins is perceived as the forward-looking genius of alt-rock radio. He was the adept programmer who took risks airing two then-unknown acts, Beck and The Presidents of the United States of America, and was able to watch his personal influence grow as both bands went on to enjoy alternative superstar status. When Collins creates a buzz, crowds of people, among them the dutiful envoys of the alternative and rock press, show up to listen.

And Subminute obliged by kicking out a fine, workmanlike, set. While they were clearly nervous and did not often acknowledge the crowd, such jitters can be forgiven in so young a band. The members of Subminute Radio, you see, are all 15 years old. When their CD is released on Y Records on February 4, they will be, by perhaps as much as a decade, the youngest band in that locally revered label’s stable. Subminute will celebrate the release of their CD with two all ages shows here in Seattle; the first will take place at 5 p.m. on the date of release at the Tower Records on University Way, where the band will play live in the store, and the second will take place Friday, February 7 at RKCNDY, at 8 p.m., when a formal release party for the CD will be held and the lads will perform with Love Battery and Muzzle. KNDD will be sponsoring both events. The in-store performance at Tower Records will be free of charge while the CD release will have a modest price, perhaps as little as $1.07.

Pandomag.com spoke with Dillon Larkin by phone one Saturday as he was getting over a tough cold that may have been strep throat. As Subminute Radio is Y Records youngest band, I thought it best if Pandomag.com’s youngest reporter were the one to interview them. Thus, what follows is a transcript of my eight year old niece, Mary Cohan, interviewing Dillon Larkin. I dialed the phone and began and ended the talkfest. Mary was assisted in preparing questions by her 13 year old brother, Noah. Just sit back, and enjoy. - Dave Liljengren]

Interview Transcript

January 18, 1997

Dave Liljengren: Yeah, hi, so this is Dillon?

Dillon Larkin: Yeah.

Dave Liljengren: How do you spell…let’s see, your first name is Dillon?

DL: D-I-L-L-O-N. Hold on one moment. … Hello?

Dave Liljengren: And what’s your last name?

DL: Larkin, L-A-R-K-I-N.

Dave Liljengren: And you are the singer? Do you play the guitar?

DL: Yeah.

Dave Liljengren: Okay. Guitar and…I’m just checking to see if…yeah, it looks like the speaker-phone is recording here, so I think we can start asking the questions. Do you write songs? Or who writes the songs?

DL: We all do. We all write them equally.

Dave Liljengren: All right, well, you know, part of the shtick here is I was going to have one of my nieces and nephews interview you, so I’ll just turn it over to her. She’s got these questions prepared. So one second here. Yeah, Dillon? Her name is Mary, and she’s my very favorite niece. And if you need to have her repeat a question, just go ahead.

DL: Okay.

Mary: What high school do you go to?

DL: Gig Harbor High School.

Mary: What’s your favorite subject?

DL: I like music.

Mary: What actually do you…participate in the high school, in at school?

DL: [inaudible] really.

Mary: Are you or were you ever in the marching band?

DL: Could you repeat that question?

Mary: Are you or were you ever in the marching band?

DL: No, I never was.

Mary: Is your dad really [inaudible]…

DL: What was the question?

Mary: Is your dad really [inaudible]…

DL: I really can’t hear the question.

Mary: Is your dad really [inaudible]…

DL: Could you repeat the question?

Mary’s Mom, Ann Cohan: Is your dad really annoying, like mine is?

DL: Would you repeat that one more time?

Mary’s Mom, Ann Cohan: Sure. Is your dad, your father, really annoying like mine is.

DL: No, my dad isn’t.

Mary: Other than playing music, what do you like to do in your spare time?

DL: I like to listen to music and I like to read.

Mary: Are there any famous bands that you particularly inspired you?

DL: Yeah, the Screaming Trees, The Doors, Led Zeppelin.

Mary: What is your dream job?

DL: My dream job would be to play music.

Mary: What influenced you to go into music?

DL: When my dad bought me my first guitar when I was eight years old.

Mary: How would you describe your music?

DL: Just…It’s got rock elements, and it’s got rock-pop elements integrated.

Mary: What will you be doing when you are 25?

DL: Our musical style is really hard to define. What will I be doing when I’m 25? I will probably be hopefully playing music, spending most of my time doing that, but I really don’t know what the future sets forth for me.

Mary: If you were suddenly nationally famous, what would you do?

DL: If I was nationally famous, what would I do?

Mary: Yeah.

DL: I’d like to maintain my integrity. And my normalness.

Mary: Who’s your favorite Beatle?

DL: Huh?

Mary: Who’s your favorite Beatle?

DL: My favorite Beatle is definitely John.

Mary: What instrument does each of you play?

DL: Hold on one moment. … Hello?

Mary: Yes.

DL: Sorry.

Mary: What instruments does each of you play?

DL: Michael Lee plays lead guitar; I play guitar and I sang; Chad plays rhythm guitar; Jake plays the bass guitar; and Ryan Tagget plays the drums.

Mary: Do you all have girlfriends?

DL: Not all of us. Just two of us do, just me and Ryan.

Mary: How do they feel about your success?

DL: Oh, they’re really supportive.

Mary: Were your parents professional musicians?

DL: No, none of our parents were. They used to be…I think one of the parents use to play in a band in high school, but nothing professional.

Mary: Have you gotten over your sore throat?

DL: Yes, I have.

Mary: Thank you. (Mary gets off the phone.)

Dave Liljengren: Thank you for being a good sport, Dillon.

DL: No problem.

Dave Liljengren: Is there anything else you’d like to add?

DL: Not really. I’d just like to say the CD comes out on February 4th.

Dave Liljengren: That’s right, yeah. And you’re excited about it?

DL: Yeah, I’m very excited.

Dave Liljengren: You didn’t really describe what you sound like.

DL: Oh, what our musical sound is? It’s really hard to define. It’s got a lot of different elements to it. Basically, yeah, each band member has a different influences. Very broad, you know, kind of a collaborative sound.

Dave Liljengren: Okay. Now, Michael gave me your schedule of upcoming appearances but I didn’t write them down and they didn’t get caught by the tape. So, you’re playing on February 4th at… Well, just tell me where you’re playing in the near future.

DL: We’re playing at Moe next Wednesday on the 23rd with Mxpx and Superdeluxe. We’re playing the 31st at Green River Community College. Then we’re playing at an in-store performance at the Tower Records at the U District.

Dave Liljengren: Oh, it’s the U District Tower, okay. I think Michael thought it was the downtown tower. Okay. And that’s February 4th, okay.

DL: Yeah. And then we’re playing February 7th at Rock Candy. That’s our record release party with Love Battery and Muzzle.

Dave Liljengren: Okay. MXPX is a young band, too, aren’t they?

DL: Yeah.

Dave Liljengren: But they’re older than you?

DL: Yes, they are.

Dave Liljengren: They’re like 17.

DL: Yes. They’re 17 and 18.

Dave Liljengren: Oh, okay. And Chixdiggit is over the hill, because they’re probably all 19 and 20 by now?

DL: Yeah.

Dave Liljengren: Yeah. Forget about them. All right, well, as I told Michael, this will be on the Web probably this week sometime.

DL: All right, great.
